Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto
Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) is a state government-owned higher education institution located in Sokoto, Sokoto State, Nigeria. It is affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University and Usmanu Danfodiyo University for its degree programmes. The current Provost is Wadata Hakimi.
History
- Established in 1970 as Advanced Teachers College (ATC).
- Renamed to Shehu Shagari College of Education in 1995.
- First state-owned Advanced Teachers College in the Northern states of Nigeria.
- Began operations on 14 October 1970 at a temporary site with:
- 67 students
- 6 teaching staff
- The college was created to address the acute shortage of post-primary school teachers due to rapid educational expansion.
- Moved to its permanent site in June 1974.
- Has had 14 chief executives since inception.
⚠️ On 12 May 2022, Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a Christian student, was stoned to death by fellow Muslim students over alleged blasphemy. No convictions have been made in the case.
