Samuel Odulana Odugade I was the 40th Olubadan of Ibadan and was reputed to be the oldest living monarch in Nigeria during his reign.


Early Life

  • Born: 14 April 1914, Fadina village, Ibadan, Nigeria.
  • Parents: Chief Odulana Ayinla and Mrs. Olarenwaju Ayinke.
  • Education:
    • Saint Andrew’s School, Bamigbola, Ibadan (1922).
    • St. Peter’s School, Aremo (1929).
    • Middle school at Mapo Central School (completed 1936).

Career

Military Service

  • Served as an Army officer during World War II.
  • In 1945, placed in charge of demobilising returning soldiers in Lagos.

Civil Service & Teaching

  • Worked briefly with United Africa Company (UAC) as a produce clerk.
  • Began teaching career in 1938 at CMS Elementary School, Jago.
  • Taught in various schools from 1939 to 1942.
  • Worked with the Colonial Office Education Department (1964).

Politics

  • Entered politics in 1959 as Member of the House of Representatives.
  • Served as Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa.
  • Minister of State for Labour.
  • Led Nigeria’s parliamentary delegation to the 1964 London Constitution Conference to restructure Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Zambia).

Traditional Leadership

  • Joined the royal chieftaincy line in 1972 as Mogaji of Ladunni Compound.
  • Conferred Jagun-Olubadan in 1976.
  • Crowned Olubadan of Ibadan on 11 August 2007, at the age of 93.

  • Co-founded:
    • Ibadan Economic Foundation.
    • Ibadan Progressive Union.
  • Honorary Doctor of Management Technology from Federal University of Technology, Akure (2005).
  • Member of The Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan (Anglican Church).

Death

  • Died: 19 January 2016, aged 101.
