Prof. Obaro Ikime

(30 December 1936 – 25 April 2023) Prof. Obaro Ikime was a renowned Nigerian historian, author, and Anglican priest. He served as President of the Historical Society of Nigeria and made significant contributions to the study and teaching of Nigerian history.


Biography

Early Life and Education

Obaro Ikime was born on 30 December 1936. He attended Government College, Ughelli in Delta State from 1950 to 1956, where he also served as a school prefect. He later studied History at the University of Ibadan, graduating with a Second Class Upper Division degree.


Career and Leadership

Prof. Ikime was a respected academic who taught History at the University of Ibadan. He also served as President of the Historical Society of Nigeria, contributing greatly to the preservation and interpretation of Nigerian history. Beyond academia, he was also an Anglican priest, integrating faith and scholarship in his life’s work.
