Nigeria is a member of the United Nations (UN). The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960, 15 years after the UN was established through the Declaration by United Nations in 1942.
Tijjani Muhammad-Bande currently serves as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Peacekeeping and Security Council Membership
- In 2013, Nigeria contributed the fifth largest number of peacekeepers to UN peacekeeping operations.
- Nigeria served a two-year term (2014–2015) as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
- The United Nations played a mediatory role in the Greentree Agreement (2006), which adjusted the Nigeria–Cameroon border peacefully after the International Court of Justice ruling on the Bakassi Peninsula.
