Marvin Dekil

Marvin Dekil (born 13 October 1969) is a Nigerian environmental scientist, lawyer, businessman, and politician. In 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Dr. Dekil as the Pioneer Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), the agency responsible for implementing the UNEP Environmental Assessment report and cleanup of oil-polluted sites in Ogoniland and the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

He was the Technical Lead for the UNEP Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland Project and served as a Technical Adviser to the Rivers State Commissioner for the Environment. He is the Managing Director/CEO of Dexcom Solution Ltd and Principal Partner at the law firm M.B. Dekil & Co.


Early Life and Education

Marvin Dekil was born in 1969 in Ogoni, Rivers State, Nigeria. He attended Akpor Grammar School, Ozuoba, Port Harcourt, where he obtained his WASC O’ level certificate. He proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt, earning a B.Sc. (Hons) in Microbiology.

He holds an M.Sc. in Environmental Pollution Control from the University of Leeds, UK, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Bradford, UK. He also attended the Oxford Leading Strategic Projects Programme and Oxford Executive Leadership Programme at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Dekil is a lawyer with a B.L. from the Nigerian Law School and an LL.M. from Birkbeck College, University of London. He is an alumnus of Kellogg College, University of Oxford.


Career

Dekil was a Prince Bernhard Scholar at the University of Leeds under the World Wildlife Fund International. He has served as a consultant to several multinational and international organizations in the UK and Nigeria, including:

  • United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
  • IBM Global Services
  • AstraZeneca
  • Environment Agency England
  • Shell Nigeria (SPDC)
  • Eni/Agip
  • Federal and State governments in Nigeria

He was part of the Nigerian delegation to:

  • United Nations Climate Change Conferences in Katowice, Poland and Madrid, Spain
  • Earth Summit Rio+20 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Dekil, a specialist in contaminated land remediation, was appointed by President Buhari and then Minister of Environment Amina J. Mohammed (now UN Deputy Secretary General) to lead HYPREP, Nigeria’s first oil pollution cleanup program.

He is currently:
