Mark Nwagwu is a Nigerian poet, columnist, and professor of cell molecular biology at the University of Ibadan. His work has appeared in Vanguard, The Punch, ThisDay, and Premium Times.

Early Life and Career

Nwagwu was born in Obaetiti, Nguru Aboh Mbaise, in Imo State.
He attended Christ the King School, Aba (1942–1949) and then St. Patrick's College, Calabar (1950–1956).

He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Zoology from the University of London in 1961 and 1965, respectively. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Zoology from Stockholm University in 1965.

In 1966, Nwagwu carried out post-doctoral research on myosin messenger RNA and muscle-protein synthesis at the University of Connecticut.
He became assistant professor at Brock University, Canada in 1969 and was promoted to associate professor in 1973.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he joined the University of Ibadan as a senior lecturer, where he served until his retirement in 2002.
He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
