Coronation and Controversy

Concerns from SOKAPU

In a January 2023 interview with Daily Trust, Luka Binniyat, spokesman for the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), criticized the Kaduna State government's policy of demoting traditional rulers in the region. He described the lowering of chiefdom status from first-class to a lower rank as an attempt to undermine Southern Kaduna traditional institutions.

Yabwat was among 13 chiefs in Southern Kaduna who had been either demoted or appointed at a lower rank when he received his staff of office in December 2022.
