Ilara-Mokin is a town in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria. It is situated about 12 km from Akure, the state capital. The town is known for its scenic environment and historical significance. It is one of the 16 communities that make up the Akure Kingdom.
History
Ilara-Mokin has a rich cultural history and was originally a part of the ancient Ife Kingdom. Oral traditions link the town's founding to migrations from Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba people. Over time, Ilara-Mokin developed into a distinct community while maintaining cultural ties with its ancestral roots. The town practices a traditional monarchy system and is governed by the Alara of Ilara-Mokin, a first-class king under the Ondo State Council of Obas.
Geography and Climate
Ilara-Mokin is located in a tropical climate zone, experiencing both rainy and dry seasons. Its lush vegetation and surrounding hills contribute to its reputation for natural beauty. The Owena River and other small streams flow near the town, supporting agriculture and daily living.
Economy
The local economy is largely agrarian, with residents engaged in farming of crops such as yam, cassava, maize, and cocoa. Palm oil production and trading also contribute to local livelihoods. Education
Ilara-Mokin is home to Elizade University, a private institution founded by Chief Michael Ade.Ojo, a prominent businessman and native of the town. The university has contributed to educational advancement and infrastructure development in the region.
