The Idoma International Carnival is an annual cultural event held in Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria.
History
The carnival was founded in 2013 by Prince Edwin Ochai under the name Agila Social & Economic Carnival. The goal was to showcase the rich social, cultural, and economic heritage of the Idoma Nation through art, craft, and social exhibitions.
Carnival Events
The carnival spans three official days starting from December 23 to December 25, with parades, musical performances, and cultural displays.
December 23
- Morning: Procession/parade begins in Otukpo.
- Afternoon: Migration from Otukpo to Apa.
- Evening: Bonfire night and music artist performances.
December 24
- Morning: Carnival displays and masquerade exhibitions.
- Daytime: Gift distribution to widows.
- Evening: Performance by HERO's ambassadors (music & comedy).
December 25
- Morning: Migration from Apa to Otukpo.
- Main Event: Face of Idoma Beauty Pageant.
Notable Editions
2018
- Featured Nigerian music legend 2Face Idibia (2Baba).
- Focused on showcasing the beauty, hospitality, and rich cultural heritage of the Idoma people.
2020 – COVID-19 Palliative Edition
- Carnival activities were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The event was repurposed as a humanitarian effort titled "Ohigbu Acholalo" (For The Sake Of Our People).
- Palliatives distributed included:
- Rice
- Groundnut oil
- Yam
- Noodles
- Hand sanitizers
- Face masks
- Cash
- Distributed to Christians, Muslims, carnival groups, and other participants.
- Prince Ochai emphasized public safety and compliance with government restrictions.
2021
- Carnival resumed with the theme "OtuOkpoche K’acholalo" (Hope for our people).
- Held from December 23–26, restoring the fun and joy of the event.
