History
Ibom Air commenced commercial operations on June 7, 2019, with its inaugural flight departing from Victor Attah International Airport (IATA: QUO) in Uyo to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (IATA: LOS) in Lagos, carrying government officials. The airline, the first state-owned carrier in Nigeria, was established under the leadership of former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel to enhance connectivity and support the state’s aviation infrastructure, including the Victor Attah International Airport and a planned Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
In May 2021, Ibom Air signed Nigeria’s first domestic codeshare agreement with Dana Air, enabling better scheduling and connectivity for passengers. In April 2023, the airline received the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) Certificate, affirming its commitment to global safety standards, and became an IATA member in August 2023. By December 2022, Ibom Air had transported over 2 million passengers, earning accolades such as Best Airline in Nigeria and Best On-Time Performance for Domestic Airlines in 2021.

Controversies
Comfort Emmanson Incident (August 2025)
On August 10, 2025, Ibom Air flight IAN513 from Uyo to Lagos became the center of a high-profile incident involving passenger Comfort Emmanson and lead flight attendant Juliana Edward. Emmanson allegedly refused to switch off her mobile phone before takeoff, prompting intervention from the crew. Upon landing, a confrontation escalated, with video footage showing Edward pulling at Emmanson’s clothing, resulting in it being torn and exposing her. Emmanson was accused of assaulting Edward and another crew member, damaging airline property, and attempting to seize a fire extinguisher. She was arrested, charged, and remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre until October 6, 2025, though charges were later withdrawn for further investigation following public outcry and intervention by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo.
The incident sparked national debate over selective justice, crew conduct, and passenger rights. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) criticized Ibom Air’s handling of the situation as “dehumanising” and offered Emmanson pro bono legal support. Public figures, including Peter Obi, highlighted disparities in treatment compared to a similar incident involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM1). The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) launched an investigation, calling for passenger accounts to clarify the events. Ibom Air imposed a lifetime travel ban on Emmanson and secured an indefinite no-fly listing with the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON).
Other Allegations
Ibom Air has faced allegations of ticket racketeering at its Port Harcourt station, which the airline denied, asserting transparent ticketing processes. Posts on X have also referenced claims of “unfair and ruthless practices” by the airline, though these remain unverified.
