Grewia tenax, commonly known as phalsa cherry, white crossberry, raisin bush, gangara, gangu, or kanger, is a species of flowering plant in the family Malvaceae. It is native to:

  • Africa (from the Sahara to Tanzania and parts of southern Africa),
  • The Arabian Peninsula, and
  • The Indian Subcontinent.

Uses

The ripe fruit of Grewia tenax is edible and is traditionally consumed in several forms: - Fresh - Dried - Powdered and mixed into drinks

The following subspecies of Grewia tenax are currently recognized:

  • Grewia tenax subsp. makranica (Rech.f. & Esfand.) Browicz — Found in Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan
  • Grewia tenax subsp. tenax
