Gongola State was a former administrative division of Nigeria. It was created on 3 February 1976 from the Adamawa and Sardauna Provinces of the former North-Eastern State, along with the Wukari Division from the then Benue-Plateau State.
History
Gongola State was established as part of Nigeria’s nationwide state creation exercise initiated to decentralize governance and bring administration closer to the people. The state existed for 15 years, with Yola as its capital city.
On 27 August 1991, during another state reorganization under General Ibrahim Babangida, Gongola State was split into two new states: - Adamawa State - Taraba State
This division was intended to further improve administrative efficiency and representation of Nigeria's diverse ethnic groups.
Capital
- Yola
Yola, the capital of Gongola State, became the capital of Adamawa State after the split.
Legacy
The historical existence of Gongola State remains significant in the administrative and political evolution of Nigeria. Its division led to the creation of new states with distinct identities and developmental trajectories.
