On July 7, 2025, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah unveiled Enugu Air, a state-owned airline marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s Southeast region. Launched at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, the airline began operations with three Embraer aircraft (E170 and E190 series), connecting Enugu to major Nigerian cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, with plans for regional expansion across West and Central Africa by year-end.
Enugu Air, developed in partnership with private aviation company Xejet, aims to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and drive economic growth. Governor Mbah described it as a “giant leap” for the state, aligning with his vision to transform Enugu into a premier destination for investment and business. The initiative, backed by a N41.1 billion transportation budget, includes plans to acquire four additional aircraft in 2025.
Residents and stakeholders have hailed the launch as a landmark achievement, with local leaders like Dr. Eric Odo and Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu noting its potential to streamline travel, attract investors, and stimulate commerce. However, concerns remain about affordability, with traders like Paschal Nweke urging the government to ensure competitive fares. The launch coincides with the ongoing concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, over 70% complete, which will see upgrades to international and cargo terminals, reinforcing Enugu’s role as a regional aviation hub. Enugu Air symbolizes not just a new airline but a bold step toward economic diversification and regional pride.
