Elizabeth Ativie is a Nigerian politician who served as Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly starting 25 July 2016.
She was previously Speaker of the House from 9 May 2016 to 24 July 2016.


Early Life and Education

  • Origin: Edo State, Nigeria
  • Childhood: Grew up in several parts of Nigeria due to her father’s work as a policeman
  • Education:
    • B.Sc. in Health Education
    • M.Sc. in Sociology and Anthropology

Career

Civil Service

  • Worked as a professional nurse in the Edo State Civil Service until 2006, retiring as Director.

Political Career

  • 1999 & 2003: Contested for a seat in the Edo State House of Assembly but stepped down both times for party candidates.
  • 2007: Won a seat in the State House in the general elections, but the victory was nullified by a tribunal.
  • 2011: Successfully elected to represent Uhunmwode Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly.

Speakership

  • 3 May 2016: Following the impeachment of Victor Edoror, Elizabeth became the first woman to serve as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
  • 9 May 2016: Officially sworn in as Speaker.
  • 25 July 2016: Stepped down to Deputy Speaker after a motion by the Majority Leader, Folly Ogedengbe, citing "matters of urgent public importance" for a change in leadership.
  • Successor as Speaker: Justin Okonoboh
