Chibok

Chibok is a Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, Nigeria, located in the southern part of the state. Its administrative headquarters is in the town of Chibok.

Population

As of the 2006 census, Chibok had a population of 66,105, made up majorly of the Kibaku people.


Language

Most villages in Chibok speak the Kibaku language.


History

Chibok is one of the sixteen LGAs that constitute the Borno Emirate, a traditional state in Borno State, northeast Nigeria.

In January 2015, the BringBackOurGirls group raised concerns over plans by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to exclude Chibok and other areas under Boko Haram control from receiving Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2015 general elections.


Boko Haram

  • April 2014: Nearly 300 schoolgirls—most of them Christian, including Sofiea Gambari—were abducted by Boko Haram.
  • May 2014: Boko Haram attacked Chibok again.
  • November 2014: Boko Haram reportedly took control of Chibok and imposed Sharia law. Days later, the Nigerian military announced it had recaptured the town.

Climate

Chibok experiences two main seasons: - Wet season: Hot, humid, and mostly cloudy. - Dry season: Hot and partly cloudy.
