Bauchi Airport
Bauchi Airport is an airport located within the city of Bauchi, in Bauchi State, northeastern Nigeria. While it once handled scheduled airline services, these have now been transferred to the newer Bauchi State Airport, situated outside the city. The IATA code BCU, previously assigned to the original in-town airport, has also been transferred to the newer facility.
Current Status
Despite the relocation of commercial airline operations, the original Bauchi Airport remains a functioning landmark and continues to serve specialized roles:
- The former northeast/southwest (NE/SW) runway is now used as a taxiway and has been repainted with taxiway markings.
- The airport is still relatively well-maintained and hosts military and administrative aviation activity.
- It serves as a transit point for:
- Air Force personnel
- Pilots and aviation officers
- International travellers
- Muslim pilgrims, particularly from northern Nigeria
Significance
Bauchi Airport continues to act as an important aviation hub for Bauchi State, especially during religious pilgrimage seasons. It plays a role in both domestic operations and international Muslim pilgrim flights, contributing to the religious and cultural identity of the region.
