Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman

Education and Career

Sulaiman hails from Kwara State, Nigeria.

  • 1990: B.Sc. in Political Science – Ahmadu Bello University
  • 1995: M.Sc. in International Relations & Strategic Studies – University of Jos
  • 2003: Ph.D. in International Relations – University of Abuja
  • 2023: Certificate in Public Leadership – Harvard Kennedy School of Government

With over 20 years of experience in lecturing and research, he is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Abuja.

In 2019, Sulaiman was appointed Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.
He was reappointed in April 2023 for another four-year term.


Political Views

  • In 2015, while serving as Minister of National Planning, Sulaiman criticized the Kwara State government, alleging a lack of transparency in contract awards.
  • In November 2017, he condemned the Buhari administration over the alleged killing of:
    • 400 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
    • Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN)
      These incidents occurred under Buhari’s presidency.
